Routing Infrastructure and Security Operations (RISO) Workshop
Synopsis
This is a five day technical workshop teaching the skills required for the configuration of scalable and secure routing, as well as best practice operation of the networks making up today's Internet.
Workshop Topics
Participants in this course will learn about:
- IS-IS design and best practices for Service Provider networks
- BGP Protocol, Attributes and Policy
- BGP Scalability (including Route Reflectors and Communities)
- BGP Best Practices, including Aggregation
- BGP Multihoming techniques (redundancy and load balancing)
- BGP Communities as used by Network Operators
- BGP Security Operations Best Practices and MANRS
- Remotely Triggered Black Hole Filtering
- Unicast Reverse Path Forwarding/BCP38
- Route Origin Authorisation and Validation
- Troubleshooting BGP & Related Tools
These skills will prepare participants to be fully conversant with today's Internet routing security requirements, as well as being able to fully implement these techniques in their own network, further enhancing the stability of the global Internet.
Target Audience
The course targets network engineers who are currently using BGP in their network, and who wish to enhance their skill-set to help secure their routing infrastructure making their network MANRS compliant, further helping to ensure the security and stability of the global Internet routing infrastructure.
Prerequisites
This workshop is not an introduction. Participants are recommended to have completed the BGP Deployment Workshop (or equivalent) and must have day-to-day experience with running a multihomed network using BGP.
The lab exercises use Cisco IOS configuration syntax.
Workshop participants must be proficient with a router command line interface, but Cisco experience is not necessary.
Participants must bring laptops with a modern web browser installed (Chrome/Firefox/Safari/Opera).
Participants must also have reviewed the Video Tutorials at learn.nsrc.org, specifically those covering:
- Internet Routing
- Routing Protocols
- All the IS-IS clips, starting from IS-IS Introduction
Objectives
At the end of the workshop, students will be able to:
- Configure routing protocols, according to industry best practices.
- Be aware of the best practices for using BGP on the Internet today, including Scaling, Multihoming, and Aggregation.
- Be conversant in routing security operational best practices.
- Be fully aware of MANRS principles and implement those in their operational network.
- Be able to deploy uRPF, ROV, and RTBH in their network infrastructure.
- Know the building blocks for how to troubleshoot routing issues in their operational network.
