Steve, I have had contact with the folks at ISAE and done a needs assessment as follows: Dr. John Sekamate is the Head of Population Studies at Makerere's Inst. of Statistics & Applied(ISAE) and the contact on the ISAE end (johnss@infocom.co.ug). Cabling/Hardware/Sofware needs for ISAE - 200 metres of UTP CAT 5 cable - 2 hubs - 2 server PCs(one linux & other proxy), atleast Pentium 166 MHz 16RAM; 2GB Hard disk with monitor. - ISAE has about 10 existing PCs(stand alone) in a separate building distant from the main Institute office block(location of proposed Computer Lab -- about 150 metres apart). We'll need a repeater to connect the two LANs. The proposed new LAB is without any PCs(I guess this where Bob Kambic would direct some of his Mellon fund to equip lab with atleast 10 PCs to start with). - 12 ISA/PCI 10 baseT network cards. - 50 RJ 45 plugs - 50 RJ 45 boxes - Trunking/conduits/pipes(local contribution) Tools/sofware etc.. - Crimping tool - Patch panels - Punch down tool - Electric drill - Cable tester - Linux sources/application software on CDs - Some O'reillys books for end users(both ISAE & Rakai are welcome our UOL/Help Desk collection with over 50 titles) Others needs like Web space can be take care of in our usual way on uol's space on psg. I don't what other ideas Bob Kambic had for the computer lab. Thanks ~~~~~ ~~~~~ Charles Musisi, East Africa Help Desk 15A Nakasero Road, Agman-Era Annex, P.O. Bob, In addition to the PCs, monitors, modems, network cards, Cat5 cabling and misc. spare parts we're sending to you later this week for relay to Makerere, we can include a couple of boxes of networking reference books as well - one for each project. O'Reilly, Wiley & Sons, Cisco, etc. all provide generous donations to the NSRC in support of our efforts to help build technical libraries, train more in-country folks, etc. We'll send some of the classics such as TCP/IP Network Administration, Essential System Admin, some network security books, and newer stuff - Linux books, Learning perl, etc. and a couple of CDs with the latest Linux distribution. Charles and Tom - if there are any other books that you specifically need, let me know soon, and if we have them in our stash, we can include them in the shipment. > The books, machines and printer are for John Ssekamatte.
