Until now there is not any organization offering full Internet connectivity in Angola. There are two innitiaves already involved in networking, namely Angonet and RIDSANG, the last one is a project coordinated by the University Agostinho Neto with funds from UNDP and SIDA, RIDSANG is a portuguese acronym of SDN-Ang. Angonet is an EMail and Information Network for NGOs, that begun as a Development Workshop (Canadian NGO) project in 1994. Both projects, Angonet and RIDSANG are very closelly working, promoting EMail and electronic information as an alternative comm tool among NGOs and partners in development. There is a cooperation agreement between us. Based on that agreement two projects share the activities related to connectivity and information services. Unfortunatelly the operation and promotion of new information tech becomes a problem here due to the poor telephone lines and the high prices of intl calls. Add the irregular power supply. Other no less important thing is the deregulation of the telecommunication market in our countries, local PTTs, goverment political institutions should be more agressive getting more involved in this issue, supporting local innitiaves willing to offer Internet Services. We know Internet is related with democracy, liberty of expression and sovereignty, the question here is we can't stop the development either live behind it. As far I know there are some private companies planning set up an ISP, local PTT is improving the telephone comm over the country, the legislation is ready to be approved. Most important, the peace is almost a fact, I hope we could getInternet in one year, depending of phone lines quality and market regulation. Meanwhile, Email is a good choice, Angonet is planning swift from FIDO to UUCP network, which hope will improve the conectivity and Host Inf services. Training and education are other of our objectives for 1996. regards, haymee ================================== Haymee Perez Cogle Angonet System Operator Development Workshop Rua Rey Katyavala, 113 PO Box 3360 Luanda, Angola Telef: 244-2-396-107/348-371 Email: hperez@angonet.gn.apc.org Home Page: http://www.gn.apc.org/gn/partners/angonet/about.html ==================================
