He is a computer engineer involved in building a sustainable network combining academic, social development and comercial interest and support. Silvio lived in Cuba and worked with us during 2 years, recently he came back to Angola. He is trying to gather some technical support and burocratical aproval. We have investigated abaut existing projects in Africa started under the initiative of different governments, companies or institutios of the developed countries, some initiatives were also started by the regional countries themselves. For these reasons, we decide to link ALMAREDE project with the initiative already existing. Some of above mentioned projects are linked with yours institutions and we will appreciate your advice and support. Some words abaut ALMARED initiative: Project name: ALMARED Non-profit consulting and services organization, specialized in advanced automated data access and telematics, covering turn-key projects, costumer support services, in house installation, staff training and information marketing research and promotion. Goals: - Staff education and trainig for asimilation and development of new information technologies - Offering telematics and electronic information services - National market development of electronic information services Services: - Education and Training - Information Network Services - Electronic Mail - Bulletin Board - Teleconferencing - Personal Computer Oriented Services Users: Non-governmental organizations, learned societies and research institutes, public and commercial sector. Some of them: - Universidad de Angola - Instituto de Investigacion Medica - Centro Nacional de Documentacion e Investigacion Historica - Union de Escritores Angolanos - Biblioteca Nacional - Ministerio de Educacion Tech. goals: The implementation of the project is expected to be done based on the technology installed at CENIAI. That means the use of UNIX-based microcomputers, modems , switched telephone network, Ethernet and TCP/IP. DOS-based PCs are going to be used too, mainly for training purpouses and for covering terminal side use and development. There have been some steps toward the connection of our system to a X25 public data network, which is on the way to be implemented in Angola. Otherwise, as far as the projects goes, this kind of connection is planned to be done. Beside, we have done some contacs with UNDP, which is interested on installing a sustainable development network, applying their own terminology. It means to install an Internet node at Luanda, also covered by our project. For a country like Angola, all this means the installation of a new technology: electronic mailing, teleconferecing, data communication. The Angola market is pleanty of computers, and even UNIX-based computers, but no one modem is sold there. You know all the benefits this services would bring to the angola society.
