We will soon offer a VWW (Vietnam Wide Web...) for ppp access within Vietnam. It will become an internet site, and WWW, once the phone company accepts to give us a wide band, and once the Prime Minister's Office adopts a policy on Internet connection for VN. === Information on NetNam Telematic Services === The Internet Access Provider for Viet Nam Operated by the Viet Nam Institute of Information Technology, NetNam is a computer network serving Viet Nam and dedicated to its development. Open to all organizations, businesses and individuals, NetNam is primarily dedicated to the NGO, multilateral, bilateral and other development organizations operating in Viet Nam. It is offering the following services: 1. E-mail Send and receive electronic-mail to and from the Internet. This permits to exchange e-mail with any correspondent at less than one-tenth the price of a fax or telex. 2. Forums An ever-expanding number of electronic discussion forums are available on NetNam, allowing subscribers to discuss and exchange information of common interest on specialized or general topics. For example, forums may include forestry activities, street children, news broadcast, NGO administrative concerns, office rentals, commercial services, classified adds, social activities, etc. 3. Databases and File Libraries As the system grows, more and more information are available for on-line retrieval, including text files and databases provided by NetNam or made available by subscribers that wish to share information and programmes with others. This may include various directories of organizations and resources, statistical compilations on development issues, annual reports, maps, specialized documentation, utility computer programmes, shareware of all types, etc. 4. Upcoming Services For the time being, NetNam only has a UUCP connection to the Internet. This does not allow for full Internet protocols such as PPP, SLIP, or Telnet. Consequently, NetNam cannot yet offer Web pages locally, nor provide access for web browsing to its users. The IOIT is however in the process of securing a wide-band connection allowing full Internet connectivity, wich should be established within a few months. SUBSCRIPTION Subscription Rates (US$): in all cases, there are charges of $0.15/kilobyte from or to the Internet. E-mail within the NetNam system is free. There are also charges for time connected: $0.01 per minute. On registration, we ask two months payment in advance. 1. Normal $20: Registration $30: Basic monthly charge 2. NGO and Charity $10: Registration $20: Basic monthly charge 3. Very Low Income $00: Registration $10: Basic monthly charge OPENING AN ACCOUNT To open an account with NetNam, there are two possibilities. You may use the services of the NetNam staff to install the necessary software and give you some basic training, or open an account yourself through a terminal emulation data connection. If you reside in Hanoi or HCM City, simply fax us the attached application form. We will contact you as soon as possible to open your NetNam account, normally within 24 hours. The voice service numbers are: Hanoi: (84-4) 346-907 HCM City: (84-8) 244-907 or 222-947 If you are outside the Hanoi or HCM City urban ares, here are some detailed instructions on how to connect to NetNam and open your own account: If you don't already have a modem, we advise you to purchase a 14.4kb or 28.8kb fax/modem. Any modem will work with NetNam, but the faster your modem, the less you will have to pay in telephone charges to Hanoi or HCM City. 1. Purchase a modem, and install it on your computer; 2. When you buy a modem, you normally also get a communication software (likely to be BitFax/Bitcom for Windows). Install the software on your computer, and make sure all the setups are correctly done (closely follow the manuals for both the modem and the software). If you can get a hold of ProComm Plus for Windows, it will be easier both to install and operate. 3. You will then be able to dial the NetNam numbers in Hanoi or HCM City, and open an account yourself, preferably using a short (no more than 8 characters), simple name such as "demo", or "demovn". Simply follow instructions from the NetNam server machine once you have established connection. Your e-mail account will be, for internet mailing: Connecting to Hanoi: <user-id>@netnam.org.vn Connecting to HCMC: <user-id>@netnam2.org.vn and simply <user-id> within each respective host. >From that point on, you will be able to exchange mail with the NetNam system operator (sysop), for any support you would need. If you can use the ProComm Plus communication software instead of BitCom, we would recommend you do so. BitCom has a bug that makes a line repeat itself every time you press the backspace key (when using the ANSI emulation mode). You will be charged soon after opening the account for registration and 2 months basic charges asked in advance. You may then pay to NetNam's Vietcombank account (sysop will give you details, once you are connected). Please then ask sysop to mail you a copy of the NetNam manual: all the information in this manual is also online, but the printed version will facilitate your operations, and reduce the time you need to be connected to the NetNam host in Hanoi or HCM City. NB: When self-opening an account, you will be place by the host into a DEMO class, which means you will NOT be able to send or receive Internet e-amil. We have to restrict that service untill payment arrangements are made with sysop, since NetNam is liable for unpaid data transmissions. The other services, including e-mail within your host, are readily available. To reach the NetNam hosts with your modem, you may dial the following numbers: For the Hanoi host: 362-356 (eight lines) or 364-144 (three lines) For the HCMC host: 251-973 (four lines) One last thing: we will need your signature for legal registration to NetNam.
