From: "Pimienta Daniel " To: Date: Wed, 17 Jan 1996 08:35:25 Est Dear Steve, Felicidades para el 1996 en primero! > I write for an update on the networking situation in Haiti. What are the > latest initiatives/developments? Please send any reports/papers that are > available, as well as local contacts if you know of any at this time. Although the situation is very hot there (a lot of groups show will to move towards Internet, including the national Telecom) there is not yet any concrete results to be shown. What could be shown is only at the level of preparation and organisation. -The REHRED project (you got the list of contacts in your server) is moving along. They received their first budget support from Swiss organisations and we are expecting faster moves, including the Internet node installation. REHRED organized, with the support of FUNREDES, last december a succesful public Internet sensibilisation day (with the support of TELECO for an online session with a dominican IP) and a 3 days e-mail course for some 20 NGOs. People are still using the (expensive) cc:mail service of the private company ACN. ACN has not moved to Internet yet. A growing number of NGOs are using the ACN service meanwhile a more affordable service get organized which should happen in the first middle of 96. -The following is more "gossip" than visible facts yet: Several entities show willingness to create an Internet infrastructure: Kiskeya university, AUPELF and Soros Foundation. Sorry not to have more exciting news :-( Best regards. ========================================================================== Daniel Pimienta Dir.
