From: Administracion Tecnica - Nodo Ecuanex To: randy@psg.com Date: Sat, 03 Oct 92 12:21:25 -0400 Randy, Greg Forbes from CIP forwarded me your message. I don't have a paper about the networks in Ecuador but the following is hopefully enough information to get you going unless you have found another source. El Banco de Pacifico has just opened up an Internet link which you might have heard about. You can get the information on that from Xavier Baquero at xbaquero@ecuafun.bitnet The Andean network is the project that Jose is heading, Thanks, Roger Calnan -------------------------- Ecuador has only in the last couple of months established a national network curtosy of the Banco de Pacifico which is provided part of it's satellite link to Miami and dedicated links within the country. This connection provides an internet service which some of the Universities and larger users with Ecuador are about to take advantage of. Apart from this connection there are no networks as such. A service that has been available for about a year and a half is the Ecuanex node which provides an email and conference service to about 100 individuals, Universities, NGO's, and social and ecological groups within Ecuador. The node connects with APC in San Fransisco twice a day and exchanges messages via UUCP. The majority of users use an off-line reader to connect with Ecuanex. The biggest tecnical problem at the moment are the quaility and avialability of telephone lines within Ecuador and links to the neighbouring countries. For the future there are plans to provide more UUCP networks between the Universities bring a number of the databases that the ecological groups have on-line, and install and Andean backbone network which will enable the Andean countries to communicate dirrectly.
