This is an attempt to fire off a message to you from our embryo Fido(tm). We're not really 490/99, that's just for getting proof that we can go - so you can't reply there yet, but perhaps you could acknowledge on your BBS. I hope we'll get a node number soon. There's still a lot to learn (we had the usual beginners' lack of luck with wrong modems, mismatching files, etc, etc.) The documentation takes some time to find one's way through, but it's nearly all there. We have Fido11w with OMMM, ConfMail, Binkley 1.5. (a) where do we get Fido12, and Binkley 2.0 (as you seem to have) - is this worth doing? (b) We tested by setting up two bogus local nodes, and found that our set-up required the person logging onto the BBS (from a third phone dial-up) to hit space-bar a few times to wake it up - why (I can guess)? Does Fido 12/BT 2 fix this? (c) Then we also found that if one got into the BBS through BT, it got into Fido, and when one hung up, the host stayed in Fido, and would not cycle back to BT (ie, Fido didn't exit) until the next Fido "event" as set in the Fido SCHED.BBS. We had to set the modem to autoanswer as well, which was a nuisance. There must be a better way - ideas? (d) We have X25 access from here. I got through to a site in Portland, from which I could dial you at 1200baud and we know of another in PDX for 300 baud. Phone calls from here are rather expensive - any leads on how one can get a contact at 2400b would be useful (or is this sort of access frowned on)? (e) Finally, the big interest for me is to get out into e.g. UseNet - any leads as to where I look for ways/documentation on how to do this would be helpful. I perused your Modula-2 conference area the other day - thanks for the plug of my book! On another tack - I sent a package air-mail about two weeks ago with some diskettes and a marked up copy of part of OreSoft's M-2 manual with some comments - hope it arrives safely. Many thanks again for all your help. Regards to Joanie. -- pat terry - FidoNet 1:105/6, Portland, OR US +1(503)297-9145 UUCP: ..!{uunet,tektronix,sun!nosun,reed}!oresoft!dawggon!pat.terry..
