During the workshop we will deploy a couple of WSN to measure environmental parameters. For each site, we need to plan the installation.

1) Air-quality monitoring (indoor and outdoor)

  • how many nodes: 3
  • what is each node going to measure: General Air Quality, or optionally specific gases
  • what sensors (type and model):
  • where will they be installed: STUDENTS RESIDENCES, indoor and maybe outdoors, close to window, on roof, or so
  • will power be available: YES
  • how often will we measure data: EVERY HOUR
  • what kind of connectivity is available: WIFI
  • will the nodes be in a safe place: YES

2) Water quality

  • how many nodes: 1
  • what is each node going to measure: it would be nice to do pH, water temperature, Conductivity, TDS, Oxygen
  • what sensors (type and model): depending on budget available - one or several of https://www.atlas-scientific.com/probes.html?
  • where will they be installed: pool
  • will power be available: NO - which means we have to add a stronger panel/battery for this one
  • how often will we measure data: EVERY HOUR
  • what kind of connectivity is available: 2G
  • will the nodes be in a safe place: YES

The goal of these deployments is to …

1) Analyze the performance of the system in terms of battery consumption, reliability of data transmission and cost of operation.

2) Showcase the use of WSN for environmental monitoring.

3) Foster the interest in WSN research at AIT.

4) Assist in the installation of an open source middleware solution to gather data from these and future deployments.

5) Disseminate the results of the deployments in a scientific publication.
