Track 3: DNS/ccTLD management & Critical Internet Resources Management


To reach a host or a device on the Internet, a name or a number resource is essential. This resource has to be unique so that the hosts know where to find each other. Ensuring we have one global Internet, ICANN coordinates these unique identifiers and APNIC delegates the number resources to the Asia Pacific Region.

This track covers the management of these Critical Internet Identifier Systems and how these key elements fit together especially from DNS and IP address management perspective.

First part of the track consist of 2 days that cover the DNS and ccTLD management aspects and the Second part of the track consist of 2 days that cover the IP address management aspects including IPv6.

DNS/ccTLD management (Day 1-2)

The modules include:

  • DNS Concepts
  • Registry, Registrar model
  • Managing Domains, Zones, Delegations
  • ccTLD management
  • Domain Name Server management
  • Policies and SLAs
  • Security, Stability and Resiliency of DNS

The course will consist of presentations, demos and hands-on lab sessions.

Internet Resources Management including IPv6 (Day 3-4)

The modules include:

  • How to request, allocate and manage IPv4 and IPv6 Internet addresses
  • Requesting AS numbers
  • Usage of the APNIC Whois Database
  • Reverse DNS delegations
  • MyAPNIC address management tool
  • Introduction to IPv6
  • IPv6 Protocol Architecture and IPv6 Features
  • IPv6 Addressing and Subnetting
  • IPv6 Deployment
  • IPv4 to IPv6 Transition Technologies and Tunneling Lab

The course will comprise lectures and hands-on exercises.

Target Audience

Designed for staff who are involved in managing and administering DNS and IP Resources, Policy makers, ccTLD operators etc.


It is assumed that participants have a basic understanding of networking fundamentals.

Workshop Requirements

It is highly recommended that participants bring their own laptop computers (with administrative access to system) to practice the lessons learned during the workshops.
