# Adopting Unifi Devices The goal of this exercise is to adopt and set up a Unifi Managed Switch and a Unifi Wireless Access Point. ## Switch Setup We're going to treat port 1 of each switch as an uplink, so plug your laptop into port 2, 3 or 4. Leave ports 5-8 empty. They've got PoE enabled and we'll use them to power our access points. From the Unifi portal on your network management virtual machine, click "Devices". ![Unifi Portal Devices Link](../images/unifi_portal_devices_link.png) You should see a single device available to adopt, and it should have the MAC address incorporated into the serial number on the bottom of your switch. Click the "Adopt" icon to add the switch to your network. Once you've adopted a device, you can use your controller to update its firmware to the latest version. Just point & click in the "Actions" Menu to do it. ## Wi-Fi Access Point Setup Now we will plug a Wi-Fi access point into the switch. Use port 5,6,7, or 8, as these ports have Power over Ethernet. After a minute or two, you'll see you have another device you can adopt. ![Unifi Device Adoption](../images/unifi_controller_adoption.png) Click the "Adopt" icon to add the access point to your network. As with switches, once you've adopted a Wi-Fi device, you can use your controller to update its firmware to the latest version. Just point & click in the "Actions" Menu to do it. #### Next Steps Take note of the IP addresses of both your switch and your first Wi-Fi device, as you'll be connecting directly to them to work on the next lab exercises.
