NSRC - UofO - UCAD FASTEF Workshop on digital archives

5-day hands-on workshop in creating digital archives from beginning to a fully-functioning digital collection system to support a collection of colonial era archives from the National Archives of Sénégal .
Workshop Goals
The NSRC and University of Oregon Libraries staff will be working with colleagues from the Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar (UCAD) in Sénégal and the Senegalese National Archives planning, implementing and learning about Digital Library collections as well as Linux System Administration to help with the creation of a Digital archive in Sénégal.
- Install and configure DSpace for digital archives
- Create matrix and plan for digitization decisions
- Establish digital collection workflow procedures
- Create underlying schema with actual digital object records in DSpace repository
Requirements
- Some Linux/UNIX | Networking | SQL databases | command line experience.
- Knowledge of traditional archival practices
- Expertise with collection content
Recommended Software
- PuTTY for Windows (SSH)
- Batch renaming software: ReNamer
- Scanner capture software (Native to scanner, Silverfast)
- Image manipulation software (Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, or other)
- Adobe PDF creation software (Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat, or PDFcreator)
- Digital Asset Management System: DSpace
