Network and Systems Security Engineer and Trainer

Philip Paeps is a consultant based in Hong Kong. He is a recognised expert in operating system development, embedded software engineering, network operations, and security. Philip enables clients to develop and operate reliable and secure systems with a wide range of applications. He has worked on operating system and application software running on HSMs, payment terminals, consumer electronics, industrial control systems, and scientific instruments. Over the years, he has built up a particularly deep understanding of real-time and distributed systems, IPv6, and wireless mesh networks.

On the operations side, Philip supports clients running critical internet infrastructure and widely deployed unconventional computing devices like agricultural robots, industrial control systems and signage for public transport. He has considerable operational experience with routing, security, DNS, DNSSEC and email.

A FreeBSD developer since 2003, Philip has direct commit access to the FreeBSD src, ports and doc repositories. Philip is a FreeBSD.org cluster administrator and the FreeBSD Project’s postmaster. He has made substantial contributions to the FreeBSD kernel, primarily to network device drivers and other parts of the network stack. As secretary of the FreeBSD security-officer team, Philip evaluates vulnerability reports and assists with responsible disclosure. He writes security advisories and develops and adapts security patches.

Philip is a regular presenter at numerous internet development and operations conferences around the world. He often teaches workshops on network security, DNS and DNSSEC, among other topics. Philip is currently working with the RouteViews project and the Network Startup Resource Center (NSRC) to assist with network routing research, security and training.
