From: mcclear@vol.al (McClear) To: sghuter@psg.com Date: Tue, 12 Dec 1995 16:36:06 +0100 Hi. I am using a commercial service run by Info-Soft here in Albania. It works like this. They have a server in Tirana and four times a day an Italian server calls and picksup email and sends email/ The return path is not the same as the outgoing path, so to send to me you cannot use the internet return protocol. YOu must use my mcclear@vol.al address. Info soft is pricy or me, and is out of reach for most Albanians. It costs $50 the first month and $25 for each month thereafter. It also costs 10 lek (a dime) for each kb of in or out material sent. Info soft is trying to get on line using a computer link. They hope to have it on in January. Phones are bad here and the system of down as much as it is up. They have made improvements in the last week. They moved the server into the telcom building and use their emergency power. Because they are in telcom they have a good line from the switch to the server. Many times my line is not good enough to send to the server. Frequent power outages effect the system, even with Telcom's emergency power. Diane Hambley in the Economics faculty is head of the local internet users group. She is not on the info soft system. She is working with the UNDP to set up a link here. They have a satellite link and can send mail from the UN. They are setting up wireless modems at 6 locations for access by academic groups, students and NGOs. It should be up the first quarter 1996.
