Comunicado de Prensa de RETINA (Red Teleinformática Académica). Retina: Proyecto de la Asociación Civil Ciencia Hoy. ARGENTINA SE CONECTA A INTERNET 2. A partir de diciembre de 2001 las instituciones y proyectos científicos y académicos de Argentina, disponen de conectividad con Internet2 y otras redes avanzadas del resto del mundo a través de RETINA, un proyecto de la Asociación Civil Ciencia Hoy. RETINA, que promovió fuertemente las comunicaciones del ambiente científico y académico durante la década del ´90, trabaja desde hace mas de 20 meses en las gestiones para habilitar un acceso a I2 en Argentina. Desde el lunes 26 de Noviembre de 2001 se ha establecido ese punto de acceso, contando con un enlace de 45 Mbps para ser utilizado en aplicaciones avanzadas, que hoy no son posibles en la Internet comercial. La conexión de RETINA a las redes de alta velocidad de EEUU, Europa y otros países, se realiza mediante la participación en el proyecto AmPath, una colaboracion entre la empresa Global Crossing y la FIU (Florida International University), que coordina el proyecto. La empresa Global Crossing esta aportando 10 enlaces DS3 para Latinoamérica y el Caribe por un periodo de 3 años. Durante aquellos 20 meses, RETINA busco asegurar la continuidad del emprendimiento una vez que estuviera a disposición de los usuarios, tratando de evitar superposición de esfuerzos con otros organismos, para lo que se contacto a todos los posibles actores de un proyecto de estas características, Universidades, Entidades de Ciencia y Técnica, Empresas, Secretarias de Estado y Minsterios, con buen eco para el trabajo en conjunto. El financiamiento es soportado principalmente por la Fundación Antorchas para el periodo inicial, con el compromiso de autosostenimiento progresivo, lo que garantizaría la permanencia del servicio, operado por lo que se dio en llamar Retina2, como lo hizo con Retina1. Se cuenta con la colaboración, a través del aporte de enlaces, equipos o descuentos especiales por parte las empresas Global Crossing, Impsat, Sun y Cisco. La Secretaria de Comunicaciones, con la que se ha mantenido un estrecho contacto, pondrá a disposición del proyecto equipos que faciliten la conectividad nacional y con el enlace externo tanto de AmPath, como otros que mejoren las comunicaciones regionales con Chile, Brasil y Uruguay, que tienen emprendimientos de Redes Académicas similares y con los que RETINA esta relacionada desde sus inicios. Los integrantes de la Comisión Técnica de RIU (red de las Universidades Nacionales) han acompañado activamente el proceso, ya que serán participes importantes de este proyecto, al igual que varias de las Universidades Privadas y Agencias especializadas gubernamentales, integradas a RETINA desde varios años atrás. La inauguración oficial del Enlace Argentino a Internet 2 tuvo lugar el día 12 de Diciembre en la sede de la Universidad Tecnológica Nacional. Se conto con la participación simultanea, usando Video Conferencia sobre IP, de la Universidad del Litoral (con enlaces provistos por Impsat) y del CRIBABB (Centro Regional del Conicet en Bahía Blanca con enlace de Techtel), en Argentina, de UCAID, Internet2, y FIU en Estados Unidos y con la REUNA, la red nacional chilena. Todas las entidades educacionales y científicas, así como los organismos de gobierno y las empresas, tienen ahora un importante papel en la implementacion de las facilidades que permitan la conexión para el trabajo de las aplicaciones que califiquen para I2, así como en el crecimiento de una banda ancha nacional, creando capacidad técnica de soporte adecuada, para posicionar a la Argentina en el lugar que se merece. ARGENTINA CONNECTS TO INTERNET2 Starting from December 2001 the Argentinean scientific and academic institutions will count with connectivity to Internet2 and other advanced networks worldwide through RETINA, a project of the “Asociación Civil Ciencia Hoy”. RETINA—who strongly promoted the communications in the scientific and academic environment during the 90s--has been working more than 20 months to create the access to I2 in Argentina. On Monday November 26, the access point was established with 45 Mbps for its use with advanced applications that are not currently possible with the commercial Internet. The cooperation of AmPath, Global Crossing and the Florida International University- FIU (which coordinates the project) makes RETINA’s connection to high speed networks of the United States, Europe and other countries possible. Global Crossing is providing a 10 DS3 connection for Latin America and the Caribbean region for a 3-year period. During the 20 months of work, RETINA wanted to assure the continuity of the project once it was available for the users, trying to avoid the superposition of efforts with other organizations. Therefore, RETINA contacted all the possible actors that could intervene in a project with the characteristics of the Internet2 such as Universities, Science and Technical Organizations, enterprises, and Ministries and obtained a good response for team work. The “Fundacion Antorchas” is the main financial sponsor for the initial period and has the compromise of promoting a progressive self-sustainability of the project, which will guarantee the permanence of the service of Retina2, as it did with Retina1. The project counts with the connection, equipment and special discounts of Global Crossing, Impsat, Sun, and Cisco. The Government Office of Communications-- with which RETINA has had a close contact-- has offered equipment that will facilitate the national connectivity and the external connection with AmPath and with others, improving the regional communication with Chile, Brazil, and Uruguay that have similar Academic Networks initiatives and that are related to RETINA since its creation. The members of the Technical Commission of RIU (National Universities Network) have been actively involved in the process. The Technical Commission along with several private Universities and Specialized Governmental Organizations integrated to RETINA since several years ago, will play an important role in the project. On December 12, the campus of the “Universidad Tecnologica Nacional” was the scenario for the official launching of the Argentinean Internet2 connection. A simultaneous participation took place with a videoconference in Argentina with IP in the “Universidad del Litoral” (with the connection provided by Impsat) and with CRIBABB (Regional Center of Conicet in Bahia Blanca with a connection provided by Techtel); in the United States with Internet2 in UCAID, and in Chile with REUNA (the National Chilean Network). All the scientific, educational, government organizations and enterprises have now an important role implementing the facilities that will allow the connection for the applications that will qualify for I2.
