It has been created and is oeprated by the Institute of Social and Economic Analyses (IBASE) in association with the Association for Progressive Communications (APC). Currently has about 5,000 PPP user accounts, 120 UUCP accounts, and several contracts for other services. Since June, 1996, it has been based at the Teleport of Rio de Janeiro, a brand-new complex of offices with state-of-the-art communications facilities. It is linked to the National Research Network of Brazil (RNP) at 384 Kb/s and to the EMBRATEL IP backbone at 256 Kb/s. Information about both backbones is fully available at http://www.rnp.br and http://www.embratel.net.br. The main WWWW site of our service is http://www.ax.apc.org. We are studying the viability of a third link (to Global One) at 256 Kb/s. AlterNex is an Autonomous System and is running BGP with RNP and soon with EMBRATEL (and/or Global One). >2) A brief technical description of the equipment/platform you are using >for your servers, routers, etc. LAN based on Sun SPARC and Ultra SPARC machines running SunOS and Solaris 2.5. Dial-up PPP services start at US$30/month (includes 15 hours/month-- additional hour is US$2). AxInfo account is US$80/semester or US$150/yr and allows full access to all our services from any Internet acess provider (does not allow access via our dial-up lines). Several other services available: UUCP gateway, LAN gateway via dial-up IP or leased line IP, hosting of WWW services, etc, etc. We do provide leased line services up to 64 Kb/s. Cost of IP services for a 64 Kb/s link is now US$1500/month (not including the physical line monthly cost to be paid to the phone company). A big hug to Randy, you and crew! And a nice 97 to you all! --c.a.
