The Cocos Islands are services by a dedicated 64K leased line. The Tail end is connected to Telstra Big Pond. The Island ISP is CCnet - Cocos Community Network is arguably one of worlds most remote. Users in the Centtral Bussines District have permant connections, home users dial into a 20 port modem bank. The email servers and web servers are telehoused in Seattle. The cost of the Satelite Connection and maintainace of the ISP is roughly 11K per month. The all costs are under written by Internet Services Corporation of Seattle (The .CC registry http://www.nic.cc) Access to the internet is $5 per year (unlimited access) - Must join ccnet. > roughly how many people now use the service ? How widespread is it ? So far limited mainly to corporate users and government agencies, although about 10% of the population use it for home use. An IT center is being built on Home Islands (by ISC) and this should siginificantly increase the up take amoung the Malay community. > is it full internet or just e-mail at the moment ?
