I was the engineer that installed the link and set up the IP connectivity - etc... ONTP (the local Telcom provider) has a 1Mb Satellite link to South Africa. 128Kb of this is used for Internet - connecting into SAIX - the South African ISP owned by Telkom South Africa. The installation included Fractional E1 converters, Cisco's and Linux machines. The link currently only goes to Brazzaville - but should be extended to Point-Noir some time in the next few months. At the same time, ONTP is installing GSM for cell phones - with (as I understand) international roaming with UK, European and South African Cell Operators... The GSM and Internet should get to Point Noir at about the same time. Dial-Up access is available in Brazzaville at 33K6. It works but I'm not sure how quickly it will be sold to the public as a service. For those interested - it took three days to fly to Brazzaville from South Africa, one night in Abidjan (Ivory Coast) and one night at Point Noir (Congo). On route, I got roaming GSM in Abidjan and Lome (Toga). Africa is switching on!
