CI's the fourth national domain opened in Africa in the framework of the RIO project: - SN: Senegal opened in late 1992 with ENSUT (Engineer school of University of Dakar) - BF: Burkina-Faso opened in late 1993 with ESI (Engineer school of University of Ouagadougou) - ML: Mali opened in 1994 with CNRST (National Research Institute) CI domain is a result of the collaboration among INSET (Engineer School of University of Yamoussoukro), ORSTOM-Rio project and MEDIAS (International research project on Global Changes). RIOnet Email access has been running for 4 years in Abidjan. It's linking presently about 10 small organizations. The opening of the National Domain and the implication of a Highs level School boost Internet in Ivory Cost. A plan to connect 7 highs training Institutes in the 3 main towns of the country is already started. The set up technology is the following : - Unix stations as Main nodes managing UUCP, X25 and TCP/IP protocols - dialup and uucp/uupc access for end users (ppp link is under consideration) - international link through X25 (Syntranpac) The uucp/f protocol is used temporarily for international email connectivity in order to reduce telecommunication expense. The national CI domain is going to be shown at AFRICAGIS conferences, Abidjan, Mars 6-10, Golf Hotel. Pascal Renaud Head RIO project
