Technical description: CIGBnet is composed by 4 main LAN sites. Central headquarters at the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in Havana, and Center for Biological Research (CIB Havana, 3 kms apart from CIGB) and two research centers in Camaguey province and Sancti Spiritus province. Among these 4 sites communication is via dial-up UUCP links. CIB link will be upgraded in short to X.25. And a further upgrade to SLIP is planned. Planned upgrades to X.25 are planned for the rest of the 2 sites. The LAN at CIGB is composed by 10 subnetworks. 9 of them are Ethernet-based, and the other one is an SLIP connection based on Phil Karn's KA9Q NOS on AT boxes with Zyxel U-1496E V.32bis/V.42bis running on leased asynchronous mode with 26 kbps of effective throughput, being the slowest IP link. 4 Netware servers and 3 UNIX hosts as well as 70 user PCs attached to the network. 40 user PC boxes will be added in the coming months. 20 single users connects via dial-up modem connections to the network.
