From: "Carlos Armas" To: randy@psg.com, klensin@infoods.mit.edu Date: Fri, 25 Feb 1994 21:11:25 EST0 "CIGBnet: The CIGB Scientific Information Network" CIGB network statements: ************************ CIGBnet is a network devoted to communication and scientific information sharing for researchers at the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in Havana, Cuba. Services: ********* -Electronic mail and file transfer -Remote access to biological sequences databases -DOS, Windows and UNIX-based bio-software National links: *************** The CIGB organization is composed by the central laboratories at CIGB-Havana and 3 affiliated centers , one of them in Havana and the other 2 located in Sancti-Spiritus and Camaguey provinces. CIGBnet then connects CIGB-Havana with its 3 affiliated centers by way of dial-up networking, a.k.a. UUCP networking. The CIGBnet connects via UUCP with the national UUCP network, having direct dial-up links with CENIAI (National Center for Automated Information Interchange), INFOMED (National Health Information Network), TINORED ( Computer Youth Club) , ISPJAM (Oriente University) and CNC (National Neurosciences Center). International links: ******************** There is an international dial-up UUCP link between CIGBnet and WEB (WEB/NIRV) (web.apc.org), an APC node based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This link allows the electronic mail exchange to the principal networks (Internet, Bitnet, EARN, etc.) twice a day. Facilities: *********** All the computing platform of the network is composed by IBM- compatible personal computers (PCs) varying from 8086 PC XT to 80486/DX2/66 MHz systems. DOS and Windows are the environments running on user computers, while a mix of Novell's Netware file servers along with System V UNIX hosts the central services where database applications and organization's electronic mail facilities reside. Electronic mail: **************** The standard electronic mail package used for Netware users is Pegasus Mail, a free package from David Harris, New Zealand, while on the UNIX side, the public domain Elm package. The use of Mercury SMTP/Pmail gateway (from David Harris, too) allows electronic mail transparency among Netware-based users and UNIX-based ones, as well as the exchange of mail with the outside world. The MTA (Mail Transport Agent) used is the free package Smail-3.1.28. Database services: ****************** There is a service developed under UNIX called Netserver, that provides a electronic mail-based database and program service. Users from the whole organization can query the biological sequences databases to perform homology searchs, sequence comparison, to obtain specific sequences and some other services using the electronic mail as interface. This service was developed by the Automation Division of the CIGB, along with a group of free bio-packages like BLAST, Clustalv, Treealign among others available on the Internet.
