From: Steven G Huter To: randy bush Date: Wed, 21 Dec 1994 00:39:25 -0800 (PST) Network name: CZECH EDUCATIONAL and SCIENTIFIC NETWORK (CESNET), Czech republic ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE: CESNET is a loose grouping of universities without formal structure which jointly run the Czech academic network under funding of the Ministry of Education. The network is operated by the Czech Technical University. CESNET also connects several institutes of the Academy of Sciences. Efforts are made to extend the scope of the network to other institutions, both academic and govermental and to make CESNET a formal body. CESNET represents the Czech republic in RARE and in EARN. More than 20 academic institutes are connected to CESNET. No formal agreement exist between CESNET and COnet. GENERIC SERVICES: DNS service and coordination for the .CS and .CZ top level domains are provided by Prague Institute of Chemical Technology (see Contacts). CESNET provides an SMTP e-mail relay as well as EARN e-mail service and gateway and a USEnet newsfeed to its users. Several universities provide gopher servers under coordination of Liberec University of Technology (gopher.cesnet.cz). Several FTP servers are active in CESNET. A pilot X500 directory service is run in CESNET with the national DSA at Prague University of Economics. CESnet also has an experimental tunnel to MBONE. EXTERNAL CONNECTIVITY: A 64 kbit/s IP link between Prague and Vienna (Austria) is operational and should be upgraded to 128 in the near future. The line is full IP carrying general IP and EARN traffic to EBONE. Another 64 kbit/s IP line (paid fully by the CEC) connects CESNET in Prague to Europanet in Amsterdam. CESNET also provides Internet access to the Slovak Academic Network (SANET) connecting Prague to Banska Bystrica by a 64 kbit/s link. INTERNAL CONNECTIVITY: In 1993 CESNET has deployed its national infrastructure based on medium and low speed lines to 12 major academic cities (among them Prague, Brno, Plzen, Ostrava) where metropolitan and regional networks are being further deployed. In Prague some 20 major academic institutes are connected to the Prague metropolitan network by 64 kbit/s. Projects are underway in Prague and Brno to create high speed optical MANs.
