From: jad@network-services.uoregon.edu (Jose A. Dominguez) To: sghuter@nsrc.org (Steven Huter) Date: Wed, 4 Dec 1996 14:56:12 -0800 (PST) Hello Steven, We still have three ISPs, run by the phone companies, say CODETEL (www.codetel.net.do), TRICOM (www.tricom.net), AACR (www.aacr.net). There's current work by at least one of the providers, CODETEL, to open up the market to other, smaller, providers. I've been pushing this way for a long time. I'm not sure on the status of the other providers as of yet. Now let's see if I can answer some of your questions: o To where does the country connect to the Internet ? o Bandwidth capacity of the link(s) ? All the providers connect to the US. CODETEL connects to CAIS.NET (with several T1s) and to SPRINTLINK.NET (with a satallite link of 256Kbps). TRICOM connects to SPRINTLINK.NET and I'm not sure what their bandwidth is. About AACR, they've very quiet during the last 6 months so I'm not sure on what is their status. o Average costs for volume bandwidth ? End users ? I don't have any information concerning the costs for the ISPs since they consider that information confidential. The users pay for the connection time rather than by volume. User have a basic rate of RD$ 400.00 for 60 hours of connection time during the month. After that they'll pay RD$ 10.00 per hour during the day weekdays and RD$ 4.00 an hour during the evening and weekends. This are CODETEL's fares. The other providers have similar rates. Re: INTEC: The main reason why I'm at INTEC is to develop our campus network and make INTEC and attractive and productive place to study and do research. We're on the process of design and plan to start building next January. We are hoping that once we come on-line we'll be able to provide access to a variety of services including our library databases (which has one of the most complete databases on dominican literature and periodicals, research publications, etc.) which is the first to provide access on-line to their catalog. We also have a series of research projects which we're hoping we'll be able to publish their work and findings on the Internet. As you can see the possibilities are incredible and we're hoping to drive INTEC to be a leader on information and research provider for the country and other researchers around the world. We'd also like to help the development of other institutions to share researchers and study opportunities, and I believe that by creating our campus and providing access to our works we'll be able to provide a great service to the country and the world. Take care, Jose A. Dominguez
