At the national level, we are working on the national academic research network and we have gouvernment funds to realize this project. We are at the fisrt step : acquisition of necessary equipments and establishment of some leased lines for some sites. This must take time. At internationnal connection, we have worked with CNUCE for the RINAF project. Under this project, the connection to Internet was a primary goal. Since this time, we have activated the "cerist" domain under the TLD "dz". Two LANs at the CERIST are connected to Internet with this machines: blazer.cerist.dz cerist-gw.cerist.dz decst.cerist.dz ist.cerist.dz dpx2.cerist.dz dsan.cerist.dz sun01.cerist.dz vaxst.cerist.dz A leased line has been established since Junuary 94 between the CERIST at Algiers and CNUCE at Pisa and this line is financed by Algerian Government. We have encountered many problems with the reliability of this line but since September 94 the line is working better and we have less disconnections. At this step of the project, we have informed all the scientific and academic institutions in Algeria about our connection to Internet and we have suggested to use dialup services at CERIST for using at this fist step the electroni mail service. This restriction to use electronic mail only now is caused by the limited speed on the leased line (9600 bps). We have received about 500 requests for using this service from universities, research centers and others institutions. All this requested have been satisfaying but only 10% of users can use realy this service because a great number of the institutions don't yet have a modem and in some cases a telephone line or PC. All the users and institutions who have an e-mail at the CERIST are registered on a directory service "DIREC_500" wich is available on the "ist.cerist.dz" site (with "CONNECT" Username on the machine).
