From: CERIST2@cnuce.cnr.it To: O.crepin-leblond@ic.ac.uk Date: Sat, 05 Mar 1994 14:39:39 +0100 (MET) The Research Center on Scientific and Technical Information Center (CERIST) is a governmental organization which works on national projects for promoting the use of scientific and technical information at national level. The CERIST has to promote the use of the new technologies on this area, and unfortunately the networking and the exchange of information. The aims of the CERIST projects are to establish national and regional backbone for the research and edcation community and for the economic community to coordinate connections to international networks. The services to provide are : - the access to databases, - the communication services as electronic mail, - the development of national databases. The plan to interconnect to Internet isn't a new project. It dated since four years ago at least. Since the start of the project, we have planned to acquire all the necessary requirements for starting with the networking activities and the promoting of it at the national level. Four years ago, we have started with the connection to EARN at first, but we have had some difficulties to establish an international leased line. After the evolution of the Internet, we have decided to interconnect to Internet. We have started with dialup connection to Internet since one year ago. We work since many years for obtaining an international leased line because we know that this is the only solution to be a real part of Internet. This leased line has been finally established since the end of January 1994 and we are at Internet registration step. We plan to use this leased line to interconnect to EARN and Bitnet also. At the national level, we are working on the national academic research network and we have government funds to realize this project. Nevertheless, the CERIST has developped a national scientific and technical Information Server for the scientific community since two years ago. This Server is used by a great number of scientific and educational institutions. The CERIST is developing some national data bases as national periodicals and monographics catalogues and some others on national publications on different scientific topics. We plan also, to permit access to all the services on Internet for a great number of the scientific community at the universities and the research centers by dialup connection in the first step. In parallel with this activities, regional projects under the UNESCO aids are in progress. For the regional maghrebian network "Maghreb_net", the CERIST has been designated as focal point and is coordinating currently the implementation of the experimental phase. For the african network "RINAF", the CERIST is the focal point of the north sub-region of Africa and at the first step, organize the connection to Internet network with the aid of Italian institution CNUCE. For the G15 group, a regional economic information network is being established between the countries members.
