From: adisaba@powergrid.electriciti.com To: sghuter@psg.com (Steven Huter) Date: Tue, 30 May 1995 21:15:49 -0700 Hi Steve: Yes, there have been some major developments in the Internet project. There was an important conference in Addis Ababa in the beginning of last April on Electronic networking in Africa (actually they called it telematics). The conference was well attended and at the end there was a lot of talk and quite significant action with regard to introducing Internet to Africa. Lishan and other networking gurus in Ethiopia have already made some progress in gaining the government policy maker's favor and active participation. We are also involved together with faculty members at the Addis Ababa University. The major request we have received from Addis Ababa, including Lishan is for lots and lots of modems. The university alone requested us 70 modems to give internet connection to all the departments, labs and libraries. The folks at Addis are quite confident that they can take care of the technical details, like training, the physical lay-out etc. We are currently working on the details of getting these modems. We are planning for a fund-raising but I am not sure how far it would help us. Steve, again, my request will be if you could help us securing robust and fast modems to be sent to Ethiopia. We would be very excited if you could give us some leads on this. Sincerely, Sam Kassegne
