Sorry that it took me so long to answer your letter. This is only a brief technical description of the current state of the Internet on the Faroe Islands. Petur Zachariassen and I are going to paring a more formal paper on this subject to the Nordunet Conference in Copenhagen November this year. As you probably heard from Eric Lawaetz, the University and a few other research institutions in the campus area in Torshavn were connected to the Internet in January this year. The connection was made through a 64 Kbit/s leased line between the Department of Natural Sciences and UNI-C in Lyngby, Denmark. The line goes through the CANTAT-3 optical cable, yielding a very stable and fast responding connection. All the institutions already had a Novell NetWare 3.11 or 3.12 LAN. The LANs were inter-connected with a backbone net of optic fibre by making each server a router between the backbone net and the LAN. UNI-C provided us with a router (3Com) between the leased line to them and the backbone net. One additional NetWare server SLEIPNIR was equipped with the various Mercury NLMs to handle SMTP and POP3. In order to simplify mail handling, all users login on their local server and attach to SLEIPNIR - thus there is no need to deliver mail between servers. Applications which all users need access to were also placed on SLEIPNIR. A CAYMAN terminal server with four telephone lines was set up to give users with modem access to the Internet, using SLEIPNIR as POP3 server. At this moment there are about 40 users using this option. We are getting DNS- and News-services from UNI-C, but we are planning to set up our own DNS-server. We are also working on a combined web and ftp server and it should be finish with in a month or so. At the moment there are about one hundred PC, three Suns and one PC/SCO in the campus ares. The PC get access to the Internet by using Windows and the Trumpet-Winsocket. The table below shows which institutions have (or will soon have) access to the Internet. Institution Domain ------------------------------------------------------ The University Administration fsf.fo The Department of Faroese fmd.fo The Department of History and Social science ssd.fo The Department of Natural Sciences nvd.fo The Historical Museum of the Faroes fms.fo The Natural History Museum ngs.fo The Faroese National Archives lss.fo The Faroese National Library flb.fo The Food and Environmental Institute hfs.fo Fisheries Laboratory of the Faroes frs.fo ------------------------------------------------------ Since all users on campus, as well as dial in user, use SLEIPNIR for mail services, the domain "sleipnir.fo" is as common to all institutions. At the moment it is only the university and the other research institutions that have direct Internet-connection. However, the faroese telephone company is planning to provide Internet services for private and commercial user, and they should be ready at the end of this year. I don't know exactly which service they are going to provide, but you should be able to get more information from Magnus Danielsen (or Ivan Simonsen) Telefonverk Foroya Logtings A Halsi FR-100 Torshavn Faroe Islands Phone +298 11433 Fax +298 16429 Lastly, here is the information the for the database of contacts you asked for: Date: 31-JUL-95 Contact Name: Jogvan Martin Grastein Organization Name: Frodskaparsetur Foroya, Natturuvisindadeildin Street: Noatun City: Torshavn Postal Code: FR-100 Country: Faroe Islands Telephone: +298 15306 Fax: +298 16844 E-mail: jomag@sleipnir.fo Node/Host Name: URLs: Date: 31-JUL-95 Contact Name: Petur Zachariassen Organization Name: Frodskaparsetur Foroya, Natturuvisindadeildin Street: Noatun City: Torshavn Postal Code: FR-100 Country: Faroe Islands Telephone: +298 15306 Fax: +298 16844 E-mail: peturz@sleipnir.fo Node/Host Name: URLs: All the best Jogvan Martin.
