From: John Bart-Plange To: sghuter@psg.com (Steven Huter) Date: Tue, 6 Dec 1994 11:42:17 Hello Steven: > Republic of Ghana (GH) > Association of African Universities Box 5744 Accra-North, GHANA > Voice: +233 21 774495 > Fax: +233 21 774821 Telex: 2284 ADUA GH > 2400 baud UUCP to Rhodes University in RSA > John Bart-Plange > Node name: aau.org Yes, the above data is correct as of now, but will change very dramatically early in the new year. There is a tall list of interested Institutions/individuals/etc. wanting a connection, and we're only now working on getting a free phone line by Xmas/early January, so the sites can connect unattended. At present we have only one host hunging off us (cdscpq.aau.org), but the synchronization is still manual, as we have to remove our fax line from the fax machine into our modem before they can connect. Unpalatable :-)!@ The 2400 modem will also change soon (for a 14,400bd). > Also, can you provide an estimate of the number of users at this > time? I would prefer to talk in terms of hosts - only one host at present (cdscpq) with at least two users. Our own local domain (aau.org) has 14 users, and this would increase once a LAN we're hoping to have in place by late Jan./early Feb. is in place. > Lastly, can you provide a brief update on future computer networking plans > in Ghana? AAUnet, which pilot effort is aimed at bringing basic Internet services to some of our member univs. in 6 countries (Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire, Tanzania and Uganda) will be a dial-up uucp system offering, essentially, e-mail (and related services: listserv, ftpmail, etc.), and news, for a start. BBS will be a later addition, as our system does not have that capability now. The full take-off of the Ghana node is only awaiting our own (AAU) internal equipment upgrade, and telecomms lines. A 2-server LAN (NetWare and FreeBSD), with the FreeBSD server dedicated to all our net connections - internal or external. My regards to Randy.
