From: "Secka-Jah Isatou" To: "Maria Dolores Lizarzaburu" Cc: Date: Thu, 9 Sep 2004 08:59:22 -0000 Maria, >1) Could you please provide a brief technical description of Gambia's >external connectivity to the Internet - including upstream >provider(s), international bandwidth of the link(s), etc.? Gambia's Internet connectivity is via Gamtel, the national telco who maintains a backbone with 12 PoPs across the country. All ISPs are required to connect via the Gamtel network. VSAT is not allowed at this point in time. Gamtel is multihomed with 1M via Teleglobe (Canada) thru satellite and 4M via Sonatel (Senegal)using microwave and fibre. Gamtel has additional bandwidth of 5M which is used only for terminating VOIP traffic. Negotiations are ongoing for additional 6M for Internet data via BT or another carrier within the next 3 months. Gamtel offers PSTN dialup and leased line for Internet Access and ADSL is under testing with few customers. ADSL Deployment to be done after bandwidth upgrade. >2)Please list all of the ISPs and Universities/Research Institutions with >international connectivity currently operating in Gambia with the >information in the following format. There is no academic network. Each institution maintains their own network. The university of the Gambia (UOG) is a young institution and the IT infrastructure is highly underdeveloped. They currently have two LANs with under 50 computers connected to the Internet via Gamtel (Router was donated by NSRC). Students use GTTI (Gambia Tech Training Institute) for some of their classes. Some distance learning courses are offered at QuantumNET training centers. Gambia College ( a teachers training institute) still has dialup access via a proxy server because they can't afford to pay for dedicated access to the Internet.
