From: ISOC Workshop User - 152 To: sghuter@psg.com CC: manceya@uog.edu.gy Date: Sun, 23 Jun 1996 10:28:07 -0400 (EDT) Steve I promised you an update - will do a quick one now rather than put it off. Maybe more later. Update on Guyana Internet situation The only service offered at present in Guyana is that based at the University and set up as a part of the CUNET project. It uses the DOS Waffle package which provides a BBS with an email service using UUCP link (to University of Puerto Rico). It began to work reliably from Jan 1995 and has done so since with a few interruptions due to hurricanes, exploding voltage stabilisers and other minor annoyances. The number of users is now about 70 and increasing exponentially. There are about 20 outside (of UG) subscribers who help reduce the phone costs which are paid by the University. It is hoped to upgrade - probably to Linux - when the hardware is available. Interested parties are still waiting for the telephone company to offer data lines overseas at a reasonable cost. Digital Information Systems is one of these parties. Note: regarding some other info on the NSRC page - Anthony Willis has been away from the University since last year and was not the system manager. Mr Samaroo has resigned and the present Computer Centre manager is Jennifer Britton (brittonj@uog.edu.gy) Tel (592)-22-5400 (work). I am offically teaching physics at UG but have taken on supporting and trouble-shooting the email system on a voluntary basis since no-one else was doing so. Other systems The IICA system is more or less for their internal use. The other system (Govind) must be for private use - not sure if it is still working. Hope this helps - let me know if you need any more info. Andrew Mancey (manceya@uog.edu.gy)
