TCP/IP is the mandatory protocol. The network is currently built on leased (copper) lines with speeds from 9.6 to 19.2 kbps. The network consists of four major network nodes, each in one of four croatian universities. The node in Zagreb is the central one and the international node connecting to Ebone in Vienna (Austria) via a 64 kbps leased line and to Europanet in Ljubljana (Slovenia) via a 9.6 kbps leased line. Currently CARNet includes 70 institutions with 60 more to join in 1995. which will complete connecting of the whole academic and scientific community. New 155 Mbps ATM backbone is being built on optical fibers and national telecomm's SDH channels. It will again include all major nodes as well as five largest institutions. The LANs in those institutions will be partially based on ATM, too. More than 50 public modems are available nationwide offering terminal, UUCP and SLIP access. The CARNet resources are currently available to everyone, including visitors and international institutions operating in Croatia, free of charge. CARNet is helping national telecomm oprator (HPT) to establish commercial IP network. As soon as it becomes fully operational, CARNet will be restricted to academic and scientific organizations only.
