There is a well established network in India for email and modems are used extensively. I can't comment on which modem to use (I am sure someone will write to you on that), but there is a periodic posting in the SCI which updates several informations concerning India. Email is one of those given in that update and here is a copy I saw sometime ago. It also tells you how to get the latest update by logging into the indian network. Though not widely used, it is certainly popular in research establishments. I am not sure if your friend is staying somewhere near Bangalore in the southern` state of Karnataka. If so I can give additional email sites in the state of Karnataka, which has by far the most extensive network compared to other states. Also Bangalore is the Silicon Valley of India and is worth visiting is interested in any High-tech stuff.
