The network nodes, i. e., packet switches or IP routers are located at universities all over the country and are interconnected with high-speed digital circuits. The Science Information Network is formed by a packet switching network and an internet backbone network (called SINET). The former is used as a communication infrastructure for virtual networks such as the Inter- university Computer Network (N-1 network), the University Library Network, the University Medical Information Network, etc. The latter interconnects campus LANs using TCP/IP. The Information Retrieval Service and the Electronic Mail Service provided by NACSIS are also available through the Science Information Network. For easier access to the network, several nodes of the packet switching network are equipped with facilities for accessing via public telephone lines. The network is also interconnected with research networks in the U.S. A., and the U.K. through the British Library.
