Box 58638 NAIROBI, Kenya Dear Dr. Ochuodho, On behalf of the National Science Foundation (NSF) of the United States, I wish to extend a warm welcome to the African Regional Centre for Computing (ARCC) to the Global Internet. I know that you have been working for years to bring such connectivity to Kenya to benefit, among others, the research and academic community. At last, you have succeeded, with determination on your part and some startup assistance from several international organizations. NSF is proud to have played a _very_ small, but nonetheless significant, role in the final connection by supporting Randy Bush's visit to Nairobi to assist with the final installations. Randy, as you know, directs the Network Startup Resource Center (NSRC) (http://www.nsrc.org), which is supported in part by a grant fron the National Science Foundation. Part of the NSRC's mission is to assist newly-emerging networks with startup needs. Now Kenya joins Peru, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and other fortunate countries that Randy may not have told us about, as beneficiaries of Randy's teaching and wisdom. I hope that the coming months and years will see your domestic network spread to serve ever wider segments of Kenya's people and thus join them closer to each other and to the people of other countries. As you know, collaboration and information about science, education, public health, commerce, cultures, and many other engaging as well as entertaining can be found at your fingertips on the Internet. Congratulations, and best wishes for continued success, Steve Goldstein ================================================================ Steven N.
