Today Omnitel is recognized as the leading provider of mobile telephony and data communication services in Lithuania. Omnitel's operating rights from the Government of Lithuania are a broadly stated authorization to construct and operate satellite earth stations and to provide telecommunication information services. Omnitel's milestones: 1991 - Omnitel begins as the Lithuanian - USA joint venture Litcom. 1992 - Omnitel installs ground satellite communications station in Nemencine. The station handles all telephone and data communications traffic between Lithuania and Northern America. 1993 - Omnitel forms a partnership with Sprint International, the American telecommunications company to provide X.25 protocol data communication and enhanced facsimile services in Lithuania. 1994 - Omnitel opens X.25 protocol data communication network, an integral part of the global SprintNet. 1995 - Omnitel opens first GSM mobile telephone communication network in Lithuania. - Omnitel officially opens TCP/IP data communication network, making available on-line services of the world-wide computer metanetwork Internet in Lithuania. 1996 - In July, Omnitel's GSM network covers 50% of Lithuania's territory and 70% of population are able to use GSM services. Our GSM network provides service to more than 15,000 subscribers. Omnitel gains dominant position in Lithuanian mobile telephony market. - In July, Omnitel Data Networks provides data communication services to more than 2,000 subscribers. Network access points are located in seven major cities of Lithuania. Employees In May 1996, Omnitel's team consisted of more than 150 telecommunications specialists.
