LATNET employs the most advanced high speed networking technology (optical and radio links up to 100Mbps) as well as the TCP/IP protocol which supports efficient internetworking in the heterogeneous environment. Applications available on the LATNET range from e-mail and remote database lookup to high speed multimedia applications, World Wide information retrieval (WWW, Gopher system) and World Wide team collaboration. Besides establishing a computer network, the development of LATNET has created also the human network of the people on the network what provides more efficient integration of different research and administrative institutions. Along with academic applications LATNET is supporting the spreading of Internet technology also in other areas (private communication, news dissemination, business contacts etc.) by means of providing the basic connectivity and initial training. For example, LATNET people have participated in the creation of the Bank Communication Center in Riga which provides efficient communication between major banks in Riga and international money transfers for them; the bank network employs the same technology approved in LATNET network and is interconnected with LATNET. Another example of successful application of the technology approved in LATNET is the development of LATTELEKOM internal data network which also employs the same technology and is interconnected with LATNET. In general LATNET is promoting the development in Latvia of the national Information Highway which would provide high quality interconnected network and information services to all who need such services. LATNET has been developed by the number of the organizations participating in the LATNET (Informatics Department of University of Latvia, Institute of Electronics of Academy of sciences, Riga Technical University, Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science of University of Latvia.) LATNET is managed together by the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science and the Informatics Department (both belong to the University of Latvia). LATNET is partially funded by the Ministry of Science, Education and Culture of Latvia. The daily operation and coordination of the LATNET now is performed by the LATNET operations and development group located in Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science. The LATNET operations group maintains also the international relations of the Latvian Academic and Research network. The guidelines (priorities) for the development of LATNET are being set by the Latvian Academic and Research networking board created by the Ministry of Education. LATNET has developed good cooperation with LATTELEKOM - the only telecommunication infrastructure provider in Latvia. At this moment (fall 1994) LATNET provides IP connectivity to the University of Latvia, Riga Technical University, Riga Aviation University, Swedish School of Economy in Riga, Ministry of Education, to the number of Research institutions of the Academy of Sciences etc. The estimated number of LATNET users include several thousand students of the connected Universities and several hundred researchers and staff of the connected institutions. The international connectivity of the LATNET is provided by two 64kbps lines: one to NORDUNET via Tallinn and Helsinki, and another to EuropaNet via DFN in Berlin. _________________________________________________________________ Last update: October 21, 1994
