ISP LINK TYPE BANDWIDTH AS ----------------- -------------------------------- -------------- ------- Moldtelecom fiber optic to DTAG STM1, 155Mbps AS8926 SunCommunications/ AS9087, and Globnet radio-relay to GTS Romania 20Mbps AS31204 Riscom satellite+uplink from Moldtelecom 5Mbps AS8474 Telemedia radio-relay to SNR Romania 16Mbps AS25454, AS9152, AS8923 Arax fiber optic to Moldtelecom 16Mbps AS15836 Starnet fiber optic to Moldtelecom 16Mbps AS31252 Besides, there are several other ISPs (MoldData, MoldPac, MoldInfoNet, MegaNet, Intersat), there uplinks ranging from 1Mbps to 8Mbps or so. Overall international bandwidth is about 250 Mbps. All of the providers are connected to MDIX - Moldovan Internet Exchange. Connection speeds to MDIX vary from 2Mbps to 100Mbps. Though, exchange traffic among all providers is not exceeding 20Mbps. MDIX is physically located at Moldtelecom POP. Moldtelecom has the most developed network infrastructure in Republic, connecting with fiber optic all regions and all major towns in a SDH network, with several redundant links. In Chisinau, links between Moldtelecom POPs are 1Gbps, intercity links - from 512Kbps to several Mbps. There is no exact data about total number of Internet users in Moldova, my estimation would be about 500.000 or more, including students and Internet cafe visitors. In cities, ISPs offer several ways of Internet connection - xDSL, cable, Wi-Fi and dial-up. Some users have satellite download and xDSL for upload and MDIX traffic. The ISP market is constantly changing. During past two years, one big Internet provider - Relsoft, was purchased by MegaDat, and latter, after a year or so, by Telemedia Group. DNT's branch, Globnet - the first ADSL provider, is now owned by SunCommunications. One could expect other major changes in this field in the future. Generally speaking, Internet access quality has improved. Most providers use fast transport to other european countries (fiber optic and radio-relay), so response times are below 60ms to European backbones, and below 200ms to US backbones. Increased quality influenced much growth of VoIP traffic. VoIP origination is now offered by many providers. VoIP termination is offered mostly by Moldtelecom and GSM operators, but we should expect that other providers will terminate voice traffic as well.
