From: "Enkhbat.D" To: Steven Huter CC: bataa@magicnet.mn, sgoldste@nsf.gov Date: Wed, 12 Nov 1997 20:32:43 +0800 Hi, >o What is the total international bandwidth to Mongolia at this time ? 128 Kbps now. In December we will extend it up to 512K. >o What equipment are you currently using .....? We use Sun servers for our DNS and Web server. Internet-Shopper's (UK) NTmail is our mail server on NT 4.0. Also we have Linux-Apache and NT Web servers. Recently we start to use Livingston PortMaster access servers with Radius and Microcom's ISPorte V.34 modem pool. Still we are using Zyxel modem rack for 14.4K and 19.2K dial-up connection. Last our innovation is PairGain's HDSL Campus-E1 modem. Just we did E1 connection to our Parliament building using it. Great thing ! We use Cisco 2514 modem on our Internet connection and some Cisco 2501, Cyclades PathRouter and Linux-software routers to customers. >o What is the total number of Internet users in Mongolia at this time ? Total number is about 1100 (thousand one hundred) not including users on other LANs. With them, i think, the number is about 1500. >Can you provide an estimate, in percentages, for the following categories: > > Academic/Research and Education 20 % > Commercial 40 % > NGO/non-profit 10 % > International Organizations 20 % (i.e. - UN, World Bank etc.) Government 10% >o Can you provide an update about the MAN in Ulaanbaatar ? We use Multipoint Corp's point-to-point 64Kbps Synch modem in some direction. It works very well. We tried to use FreeWave's wireless 100Kbps Asynch modems in multipoint mode. But it was unsuccessful. Now we installed them in point-to-point mode and it works quite stabile. Of course throughput is not good as Multipoint's modem. About 10 LANs are connected to us using wireless modems. We are looking for Multipoint's new multipoint radio routers with big interest. We are tired to have many type of modems from different vendors :(. Now we are feeling that very important to have manageble, expandable and open solution for fast growing needs.
