For the backbone, there is a 64kb satellite line between New Caledonia and France provided by FCR [France Cable et Radio]/Transpac who are french Internet providers. Locally, we use a 19200 bauds lesased line between Orstom and FCR. Yes, it's slow...but it's the beginning..... TCP/IP is provided by a PPP layer between my Sun Sparcstation 5 under Solaris 2.5 and FCR Livingston Portmaster. Only two sites are connected to Internet at the present time in New Caledonia: Orstom and a private company which offer public accesses. I think that this situation will change very rapidly. Due to the slowness of the leased line, Orstom is offering only E-mail access to non-Orstom people. Cordialement Michel ____________ Michel MENEZO Computer System Manager ORSTOM P.O.
