Both [157]:cgi236 and [10074]:cgu018 are Dialcom addresses, one off a "domain" 57 in the US (1) and one off "domain" 74 in the UK (100). As a point of trivia, I believe that IITA is also on 157:cgi072. Both are associated with the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). If you go back to "The Matrix" and look up CGNET, which is Sec. 20.7.1, p. 599, in my copy, you'll see some background on this conferencing system founded by CGIAR. The rest of the story, since publication of "The Matrix", is that CGNET, after cessation of funding for ISI's Commercial Mail Relay and after failure of attempts to work with Dialcom to establish an Internet gateway, decided to do it themselves and have done quite well at it, connecting not only CGIAR stations but also many UNDP, UNEP, UNHCR, and other non-profit international offices around the world. You should be able to reach those addressees using icraf@cgnet.com and iita@cgnet.com. A full list of current CGNET accounts should be available by ftp from the same host. *HOWEVER* ========= Anyone who thinks, "Oh, this is a good way to look for Uncle Joe who's somewhere in sub-Saharan Africa on safari," should think again. Those mailboxes are on terminals in Nairobi, Ibadan, etc., connected to host machines in Palo Alto, London, or elsewhere by what we would consider to be very expensive links, such as transoceanic telephone lines. If you have business with them, fine; that's why they pay for the link. But if you want some favor unrelated in any way to their work, or if you merely want to chit-chat because your acquaintances at home bore you, please look elsewhere. They have neither the time nor the money for this. Ric ^^^^^Walter Reed Army Institute of Research U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command
