You responded to me at that time, or in some way you are fimiliar with my project. Here is what happened: I arrived in Kathmandu equipped with a 386 laptop and pocket modem. I had a program to call WINNET, a US host that provides software for quick up/down load of email and Usenet. I was not sure if the software worked as I had had difficulty calling into the Winnet system from Seattle, WA, (except on their 800 numner, which would not have worked from Nepal :>) So I was quite relieved that Mercantile Office Systems (MOS), Durbar Marg (near the main gates of the Royal Palace) had a functioning email host in Kathmandu. They have a dial-up account with Ernet in Delhi (Education & Research Network) to which their system called several times a day. For a while I accessed their system from my hotel room! As far as I know fees for the use of the system have not yet been established as it is in the experimental stage. There was talk of charging NR25 (about US$0.50) /kb, (kb=about 1000 characters) Recently MOS announced that they would be switching their link to Singapore, I am not sure if that is another email link or a live internet connection. I was able to assist MOS by providing some Internet books and by putting them in touch with one of my email friends from Portland OR who found technical information and put them in touch with a provider in Singapore. BTW MOS also runs a BBS on behalf of the newly formed computer association of Nepal. MOS has opened their system to people wanting to send/receive email. I have suggested that they open some sort of fax gateway or mail gateway, but I think they are too busy getting the basic system going. I think there is possibility for someone with a computer, telephone and a lot of time to establish an email to mail, fax or delivered message service in Kathmandu. That would provide a way for people on the net to communicate with people in Kathmandu who do not have a computer/modem/phone or the inclination to get same. So thank you for your help.
