There are only very limited number of sites that are connected to Internet. With the help of Robert Elz from University of Melbourne, Australia, we have started a DNS service for PNG. Presently the Database is kept and updated in Melbourne. But there are plans to move it here soon. There is still no ISP providers here in PNG. At the moment, we have an Intel based machine which has a 40 MB hard disk. The software is a microport unix v.II, modified by a gentleman from UK in order to facilitate message switching for local users based on Internet (user@domain) style addressing. The environment is UUCP only and this machine or mailserver allows others to connect to it for delivery or pickup of mail again via uucp. I have designed and am configuring a SUN sparc5 machine to replace this environment. The connection to Melbourne or generally out of the country has been the bottleneck. We are using Prometheus 9.6 K ProModem 9600-EC modem. >3) Are there any efforts to implement TCP/IP connectivity at the >University ? I have designed and implemented a Fiber Optic backbone for the university. The work is still on-going but due to complete soon. The backbone will connect all the university via a TCP/IP connection with a Switching Ethernet Hub at the center of the Fiber Optic Star network. Each department or the cluster of users will be using Novell Network and connect to the backbone. This work has been going on for nearly 3 years becasue of the financial crisis of the University; still due to complete. Many thanks. Kam. Postmaster.
