From: Steven G Huter Date: Thu, 8 Dec 1994 20:47:37 -0800 A Connectivity Factsheet for: Research and Academic Networks in Poland (NASK), Poland ======================================================= Organisational Structure: NASK is a research and development unit established by State Commitee for Scientific Research (KBN). It is feeded by state budget and runs government programs. NASK act as polish representative in RARE and EARN. More than 50 universities, 100 scientific institutes and 10 government institutions are connected to NASK. NASK also provides commercial services (especially dial-up e-mail) to approximately 100 companies. Generic Services: NASK provides to its users full IP connectivity services, DNS services and coordination for .PL top level domain and for regional domains, mail relaying, USEnet News distribution, ftp archive services as well as an access to the Internet through individual accounts on NASK owned servers. All services including Internet connectivity are accesible over leased lines, switched X.25 lines or switched telephone lines (dial-up). Several universities have established public accessible gopher, www and ftp servers. A pilot X.400 service is run in NASK under coordination of Technical University in Wroclaw. A pilot X.500 directory service is run in NASK with the national DSA at Mikolaj Kopernik University in Torun. External Connectivity: A 2 Mbit/s link between Warsaw and Stockholm (Sweden) is operating via satelite. The line is IP carrying general IP and EARN traffic to EBONE and X.25 traffic to UNISOURCE. A 64 kbit/s IP line connects NASK to ACOnet in Vienna and should be upgraded to 128 kbit/s in the near future. NASK has also 9.6 kbit/s connections to Moscow, Russia (Internet and EARN) and to Lvov, Ukraine (Internet only). The lines are going to be upgraded to 64 kbit/s soon. The 9.6 kbit/s to Minsk, Bielorus is going to be established. Internal Connectivity NASK national infrastructure is based on medium (64 kbit/s) or high (2 mbit/s) speed lines among 10 major cities (Warszawa, Torun, Gdansk, Szczecin, Poznan, Wroclaw, Katowice, Krakow, Lublin, Lodz). There are metropolitan networks operating in majority of these cities and in the nearest future all these cities will be covered by high speed MANs. All intercity lines are going to be upgraded to 2 Mbit/s. There are also a dozen of towns interconnected via 9.6 kbit/s links.
