From: Bill Haigh To: Maria Dolores Lizarzaburu Time: Sun, 23 Jan 2005 13:35:02 +1300 Subject: Re: The development of the Net in Pitcairn Dear Maria, Since August 2004, Pitcairn has switched to another Internet Service Provider, with greater bandwidth, but using the same satellite dish as before. The new system uses the NSS 5 satellite, a geostationary satellite at 177.0°W, just a few degrees away from the Intelsat satellite that was previously used. The link terminates in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA and connection to the Internet takes place there. There are also two VoIP telephones on the island, one for government officials and one for the general public at the Satellite Station. The system is a shared hub/network known as iDirect. For further information please see http://www.lbisat.com and click the iDirect icon. It provides has a bandwidth of 512kbps into the island and 128kbps out from the island, and can be upgraded at short notice if there are temporary increases in demand. With the pn top-level domain Bill Haigh is now the Administrative Contact and Technical Contact. Details are at http://www.iana.org/root-whois/pn.htm. The obstacles in development remain the same as in your previous report, but there have been significant improvements since that report. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance. Kind regards, Bill Haigh. Registrar for the Pitcairn Islands top-level domain.
