From: NEULEIF@vm.uni-c.dk To: A thousand words a day Date: Thu, 19 Nov 92 09:16:30 DNT Hey Joel On 18 Nov 1992 08:57:11 -0700 (MST) you said: >Good day! > >I'm a PhD student doing research on computer networks in the Soviet Union. >I hope my English isn't too presumptuous; I've never learned Danish. >Please accept my apologies. > I will say the same to you about my english. >I'm trying to find out some rough statistics on how much the link between >DKEARN and SUEARN2 is up, and why it goes down so often. Is there anyone >at your computer center who would be willing to talk to me about that? > It's very simple: The link is permanent down. It was a 9600 Kbit/s leased line, that the russian PTT wanted so many money for that the people behind it could not afford it anymore. The solution is a dial up line IP line based on two PC's both with the KA9Q software. The line speed today is 2400 Kbit/s with MNP5 error correction, due to very poor telephone quality in the SNG states. The russian call in every night and fetch the mail we have collected for them. We reroute all the EARN/BITNET traffic to the mail spool server. It's very difficult to say something about the line statistics, at the moment the russian is having problems to fetch their mail at us. The reason is un- known, maybe the poor line quality. Hope this help you. Regards Leif Nedergaard UNI-C Danish computing center for research and education
