The ffa.int correctly identifies the Forum Fisheries Agency, which is an international organisation. The Forum Fisheries Agency was setup in 1977 by the leaders of the South Pacific Forum to co-ordinate regional fisheries policies and to promote the development of fisheries resources to ensure that maximum benefits are achieved by the peoples of the South Pacific region from their fisheries. FFA has a membership of sixteen South Pacific countries: Australia, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Zealand, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu and Western Samoa. The exclusive economic zones of the fourteen island member countries excluding Australia and New Zealand is approximately 30 million square kilometres. The work of the Agency is partitioned into five functional programme areas: Economics and Marketing; Monitoring, Control and Surveillance; Legal Services; Information and Technology; and Corporate Services. The organisation is headed by a Director who is appointed by representatives of all sixteen member countries. He is assisted by a Deputy Director who is also appointed by representatives of all sixteen member countries. Both appointments are for three year terms. Mr Victorio Uherbelau from Palau is the current Director until November 1997. Mr Ian Cartwright from Australia is the current Deputy Director until April 1999.
