From: Francis MARSAC To: sghuter@nsrc.org (Steven Huter) Date: Fri, 04 Oct 1996 13:40:17 +0300 Seychelles Oct 4th, 1996 Steve, The present highlights in the matter of electronic communication in Seychelles is the launch of the Internet, which was official Friday 27th Sept. Three seychellois companies have joined together (MBM, VCS and SPACE95) to create ATLAS, the front Internet Co in Seychelles. A server is now in operated by this company. They offer 2 type of contracts, corporate (3000 Rs registration fee + 1000 Rs/month for 4 mailboxes and 20 hrs connection by month... + 0.50 Rs/mn for extra time) and individual (750 Rs + 250 Rs/month for 1 mailbox and 20 hrs connection). It is still expensive compared to Western countries, but according to the size and remoteness of the country, it is not that bad. So far, nearly 200 potential subscriptions have been registered, but I don't have more infos at the time being. In Seychelles, the use of Internet will go more for business, since the country is now offering services for offshore banking,a nd created a International Trade Zone where no duties are requested for running a company. However, us at ORSTOM, shall be linked especially to requesting data from scientific databases. best regards ---------------------------------------------------------- Francis MARSAC Tel (248) 22 47 42 ORSTOM - BP 570 Fax (248) 22 45 08 Victoria - Mahe Email: marsac@orstom.rio.net SEYCHELLES
