Date: Sun, 13 Jan 2002 12:36:16 +0000 (GMT) From: Hago Dafalla To: Steven G. Huter Subject: Internet update for the Sudan Dear Steven Since 1998 Sudan has full Internet Services. All Universities, Institute and personal computers are connected to the Internet through modem and phone line (PPP). At this time there is only one Internet Service Provider (ISP) company in the Sudan, based on Khartoum (Capital of Sudan) called SudaNet.This company serves all the country. The connection is very low and the speed is very low. The Bandwidth is narrow e.g. If you want to connect to the Internet maybe attempt at least 5 or 6 times to get connection and you must dial Khartoum to connect. This cost is very high. Some times you failed to connect to the Internet and usually the connection is disconnected while you are sending or browsing. After this the Sudanet makes the connection to Khartoum without zeros, but it remains expensive. Now another company called Zina Net shall start to serve INTERNET service soon. This company may develop and assist the people here to connect to the Internet with very high speed. The system phone line in Sudan is very high speed and good quality (currently an optical fiber cable connection are develop in all area in my country). Our country needs more ISP companies to work together to bring high quality and to improve the quality services. Really in Sudan we need to work to find high quality services. Still the number of Sudanese people who used the Internet are low compared by other Developing Countries, because the cost of the Internet is very high and all people here are poor. Even the University sometimes is unable to pay the cost of the Internet. All people here used the Internet are working in Big Companies, University, Institutes, Ministry and Nongovermental Orgnaization (NGO).
