From: Steven G Huter To: randy bush Date: Wed, 21 Dec 1994 00:47:26 -0800 (PST) Network name: SLOVAK ACADEMIC NETWORK (SANET), Slovakia ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE: SANET is a non-profit organization founded in 1992 and supported by the Ministry of Education. The main goal of SANET is to provide network connections for all universities and research communities to Internet and to build an internal IP network infrastructure in Slovakia. SANET represents the Slovak Republic in RARE and in EARN. Formal structure of SANET consists of the SANET Executive Commitee, whose members meet every month, and the Technical Team which solves some technical problems if it is needed. SANET is also open to other organizations (e.g. governmental) that would like to connect to Internet. At this time SANET has about 200 members. GENERIC SERVICES: DNS service and coordination for .SK top level domains are provided by EUnet Slovakia. At this time SANET provides all main Internet services for its users, e.g SMTP E-mail relay as well as EARN E-mail service gateway running at UAKOM UMB in Banska Bystrica. SANET provides USENET news service too through several NEWS servers. Several SANET nodes provide FTP, FSP, and Gopher services. Main FTP archive is running at UAKOM UMB in Banska Bystrica (nic.uakom.sk) which mirrors many directories from the world FTP archives.A pilot X.500 directory service is run at SANET with the national DSA at UAKOM Matej Bel University in Banska Bystrica. Other X.500 servers are at Zvolen, Zilina and Kosice SANET nodes. The latest service SANET provides is WWW. The top level WWW server runs at The Technical University in Zvolen (www.tuzvo.sk). EXTERNAL CONNECTIVITY: At this time SANET is connected to Internet through two 64KBp/s IP links. The first line connects the Banska Bystrica SANET node and the Prague CESNET node in the Czech Republic. The second line connects the Bratislava SANET node and Vienna EBS (EBONE) in Austria. Main IP and EARN traffic from SANET is routed through the line from Banska Bystrica. SANET has one gateway to X.25 public network in Bratislava. INTERNAL CONNECTIVITY: The main SANET backbone connects the three largest cities in Slovakia: Bratislava, Banska Bystrica and Kosice. The other main academic cities ( Zvolen, Zilina, Nitra, Presov and Martin) are already connected to this backbone. In the near future other towns with large communities of network users should be connected too. Currently all SANET nodes are connected through 19.2 kbps low-speed IP lines but in the near future we are going to upgrade them to 64 kbp/s.
