L.H. Landweber recommanded us to communicate directly with you about our request of domains in developping countries ----here is the P.Renaud's question ---- Date: Mon, 18 Nov 91 19:13:24 +0200 From: RENAUD Pascal - MTI To: lhl@cs.wisc.edu Cc: michaux@orstom.orstom.fr Subject: Addressing e-mail in Africa Dear Larry, I submit you one of my problem I don't know to resolve: Nodes of our network in Africa are identified with french domain address "orstom.fr". So we have "dakar.orstom.fr" in Senegal, "ouaga.orstom.fr" in Burkina-Faso, "niamey.orstom.fr" in Niger, etc... This is not clean and look a little ...colonialist. But, it has been the most simple way to deal with network adress. I had not been able in France to found somebody that explains clearely to me, how to get the agreement to use the ISO top level domain for theses countries, such as "orstom.sn", "orstom.hv", "orstom.ne", etc... The worst is for "isra.orstom.fr" where ISRA is a research Institue of Senegal. I am sure you can do something for us. Now, this network (call RIO) is going to be used by more not ORSTOM organisations as NGOs. It's time to make addressing in conformity with international standards. Thanks very much for your answer. ------------------------------------------- Thank you for your help. Landweber), klensin@mit.edu (John C. Klensin) Hi, I think that we have two problems here. o Your application form implied that the primary server would be the host 192.136.53.1, yet I can find no nameserver running on that host. o You are trying to register the Senegal national domain yet you are a French institution. Which nameserver ----- ---------- I can instantly start a primary nameserver for the .SN domain. It would take ten minutes. But, from your form, it seems that you expect the host 192.136.53.1 to be the primary. This implies that you wish rain.psg.com to be secondary, which is quite fine with me. No problem. But, running nslookup, I can find no nameserver of any kind running on that host. Then I noticed that your form implied some months before such a nameserver would be operational. If that is your plan, then we should wait until then to register the domain. But, if you wish, I could set up the primary server in ten minutes, and arrange secondary servers in North America, Africa, and Europe. Later, if and when you set up a nameserver at 192.136.53.1, we could change the primary to that host. So we need to chat a bit more for me to understand what it is you wish me to do. Senegal != France ------- -- ------ It is very very unlikely that a French governmental institute will be allowed to register the Senegal country domain. An analogy is that the French would not have appreciated an American organization registering .FR. A Senegal organization and people would have to register .SN, as it is *their* name. I could be wrong here, but have just gone through a much milder but similar case and had this all explained to me in dismal detail. There would seem to be three alternatives: o Get a Senegalese organization in Senegal with Senegalese people to register .SN. I will gladly help. o As it seems to really be a French governmental institiute, leave the host under the French domain, .FR. This requires no action, so I will definitely help. :-) o Talk to John Klensin and me about registering an international domain. We have been discussing this problem and some possible solutions (e.g. for the UN) with the net.powers for a month or two. We would gladly help. Please clarify who is registering the domain and which hosts are to be nameservers. Sorry to be so confused. randy
